Bluetooth Will Not Disconnect

Contrary to the usual complaint of bluetooth unexpectedly disconnecting, this issue is about bluetooth not disconnecting when it should.

After connecting to a bluetooth (BT) speaker and using with no problem, a hey Google command to "disconnect bluetooth" does not work.

Checking the BT settings from the display shows that the BT speaker is disconnected, (i.e. there is an option to "connect"), however, the BT speaker remains connected as evidenced by a connection light on the BT speaker speaker and if commanded to play music, audio is still going to the BT speaker.

Troubleshooting steps:

Removing power from the Google Home finally results in disconnect
Factory Reset Google Home did not help
Unpair/Repair did not help
The issue persists even when paired with a completely different BT speaker
The issue persist whether the disconnect command is within a routine or just manually spoken
Nothing in the Google Home App seems abnormal

The BT speaker in this case is Bose Soundlink Micro. However also tried with an iHome brand BT speaker.

A routine to do the disconnect has been working fine for probably a couple years. Now its a problem.

Any help or ideas appreciated.

Hey mixxmeister,

Thanks for reaching, that certainly hasn't been easy for you.

Once you pair and connect your speaker or headphones to a speaker or display, it will auto-connect unless the speaker gets disconnected or turned off. Could you try saying "Ok Google, clear all paired devices"? Is it also happening when you connect your Google Home to your phone?

Thanks for the reply.

Please note the issue is about the display not disconnecting Bluetooth when command to, either by voice or routine.

Will try the clear paired command you suggest, assuming this does something different than forgetting paired devices from the settings menu or factory reset, which has been done.

Also will try pairing with phone. Assume this just tests if the behavior is then same when connected to another type of Bluetooth device.

The problem still exists even after doing the "clear all paired devices" command. I suspect that action wasn't any different than having done a factory reset.

The only other interesting thing here is that after re-pairing with a BT speaker, the function to connect and disconnect works, whether by voice command or by routine. When the routine then runs via schedule, it fails to disconnect and voice commands to disconnect also fail until things are somehow reset. The routine is scheduled to execute hours after the BT device is connected, which shouldn't make any difference since as mentioned, the setup has works for a couple years without issue.

Next test is to remove the scheduled BT disconnect routine from the equation. This means getting connect/disconnect to work, then using only voice command to disconnect hours later... unless you have some other suggestion. By the way, Google home connect to phone is via WiFi and the Home App. Not sure what you meant by connect to phone.

Thanks for the follow-ups.

It appears we are able to work around the problem by using a different method in the routine.

The main problem again was that the Bluetooth connection was not being dropped when command to, even though the display would indicate no connection.

It seems perhaps the display gets into a bad state since at some point, & no combination of voice or manipulation gets it to disconnect.

Anyway, the entire operation consisted of 2 routines.

1 to play music from Pandora for couple hours and
1 to disconnect Bluetooth after several hours.

So now instead, we are using a single routine and the new delay action within it to disconnect the Bluetooth after several hours. This seems to be working.
