Hey Cricket,

Welcome to the Google Nest Community Forum.

Apologize for the late response. To make it easier to talk and listen to the Google Assistant while casting content, the Assistant can automatically lower the volume of videos and music being casted to TVs. This feature is on by default, but there's a way to prevent Assistant from lowering volume.

Follow these steps below to know-how:

Make sure that the mobile device is linked to the same account as the Google Nest or Home device.

Open the Google Home app.

In Home View, tap the device card for the speaker or display to adjust the volume for.

At the top-right, tap Settings > Audio.

Tap the checkbox or slide the slider off to toggle Lower volume when listening.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Muddi

I have the same problem. It used to work fine but now it seems to be broken.

@Muddi The problem is the Google speaker lowest vizio TV volume but no longer raises volume after it is done. So tv essentially just ends up stuck muted. My tv is up to date using cast version 1.50.243780

Hopefully there will be a bug fix soon?

I hate to bump my own post, but it's been over 2 months since this bug was first reported and it still hasn't been fixed. Is there a better way to submit a bug report? It's a bit tricky because the problem may be the google speaker or the chromecast software, or vizio's implementation of it.

Yes mine is the same exact model as yours in smaller size e55-f1. It never had great wifi but it worked originally, the room I have it in is the one room farthest from my router with bad wifi signal, but it got 4k with like 2ish bars of connection just fine when i first got it. But I got a new wifi router from at&t that somehow is actually worse for that one room and gets only barely 1 bar (and better for every other room go figure). Because my wifi problems on Vizio started around the same time as new router I couldn't really troubleshoot and isolate the problem. It could just be the wifi or something else is dying on vizio or there was a firmware update that went wrong. The weird thing with the chromecast with google tv is it does something weird if you turn cec on and causes tv to randomly reboot (not just turning on off an actualy full reboot). My fire tv never used to have that problem with cec enabled. But the chromecast received a better wifi signal and gets me the 50mbps connection to handle 4k streaming. (Considering I have 1000mbps internet it's still not a strong signal lol).

Hey Bandanas,

Upon checking, the built-in Chromecast version of your TV is outdated - that's the reason why you're having issues with the volume when talking to your speaker. Also, this is the reason why some of the settings are not available on the Google Home app. You might want to check with the manufacturer if you can still update it to the 1.56 firmware version.

@madmax988: Thanks for providing the steps on how to enable the settings to lower down the volume when Assistant is listening. To confirm, have you tried calling your TV manufacturer? Looks like a compatibility issue since your TV have an older cast version that's not supported anymore.

Cheers,

Hey madmax988,

Please note that this is an issue with the cast firmware version of your TV as it has an old version, and is not compatible with the Google Home/Nest devices. I suggest you check with the manufacturer if there are ways to push an update to your TV's cast firmware version.

Cheers,

@Muddi My tv has had this problem for years, and when the problem started it was the most up-to-date firmware google offered for any device and a tv that was only 2ish years old. I'd have to double check what the current version # is. but the problem is NOT an outdated firmware or at least it wasn't when the problem started years ago. In addition even when the TV was brand new google home struggled to control it properly and worked maybe 25% of the time. The problem is clearly on google's side, since I've never had any problems using alexa to control the same tv.

I also experience other issues attempting to use google home mini with a brand new chromecast 4k with google tv. It seems the google home speakers just aren't very good at controlling tvs. I also experience issues in another room using a google speaker with a screen to attempt to control my LG OLED C1 tv that supposedly has google assistant built in, but works maybe 1% of the time. Google's voice controls just don't seem to be ready for primetime.

Hey madmax988,

I understand. Please note that my previous post is specific to the model of Vizio TV that you and the OP have. If you have issues with other devices that are currently supported - we can go ahead and troubleshoot that. To confirm, is your LG TV setup on the Google Home or LG ThinQ app? Also, how often do you experience an issue controlling your Google TV with your speakers? What are the commands that usually fail?

Cheers,
