Brand new google nest mini cannot find our wifi

Hi, I received our brand new google nest mini today and have spent 2 hours trying to install it but it will not find our wifi network. I have tried restarting the router, plugging the router and nest mini into different PowerPoints, moving them closer together etc and nothing is working. It isn’t even working when I manually put our wifi into Google Home. None of our other devices are having trouble connecting to our wifi. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Hi there! The only thing I can think of is checking the settings on your router. Check to see what bandwidth the router is using, and if you can, change it. Then try to connect your Google Home Mini again, and see if it picks up the network. If that does not work, the issue may be hardware related, and you should then try to contact Google support directly.

Brookie294, are you using a private home network? Make sure your phone is connected to the network where you want to connect your Google Nest Mini. Give these additional steps a try:

Check router settings. (AP isolation must be disabled and UPnP must be enabled).
If you're using IOS, make sure to turn on Local network access for the Google Home app on your phone settings. Here's how: Privacy > Local Network > Google Home app.
Use a mobile hotspot to set up your devices (To isolate the issue).

Hi Alex,

I have tried all of the above and the only thing that worked was using a hotspot but as soon as the mobile phone left the house it disconnected and would need to be reconnected every time to the hotspot on the other phone. This isn’t ideal. I wonder if we need a new router.

To confirm, are you able to see your network using other devices like phones or tablets? What is the make and model of your router? Also, make sure that there's no limit on how many devices can be connected to your network.

Yes you can see several other devices on the network. The router is Telstra brand. Unsure how to check if there is a limit to how many devices can be connected.

Hey Brookie294,

Sorry for the delays. It looks like some settings on your router are restricting your Nest Mini from connecting since it is working on a mobile hotspot. Try updating the DNS and port settings on your router to check if that fixes the issue. You might need help from your network/router provider to do this if you're not familiar.

Ports Setting:
Outgoing UDP Multicast on port 1900 and 5353
Incoming UDP Unicast on arbitrary ports > 53 and 123
Outgoing HTTP on port 8008, 8009, 80 and 443

UDP Setting:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Hi thanks you for your suggestion. I’ve figured out how to update the UDP setting but I am struggling with the port settings. Is it under port forwarding? I’m logged in to my router and unsure what I need to type in where. Particularly whether I should be selecting “other” for the service, or one of the other options. When I select another option e.g “http”, the external and internal port fields as well as the protocol field are locked and I cannot edit them.

the fields I have are:

- service

- protocol

- external host (defaults to “any” but can be edited)

- external port

- internal host

- Internal port
