Nest aware subscription expired, now I can't view anything but a live feed of my cameras from web?

Is this how these cameras are supposed to work? Can I not even view what happened 20 minutes ago? Ever since my subscription expired I'm only able to view a live feed of my cameras. I cannot rewind, view clips or anything. If i go in through the app on my phone, I can see pictures of "events" but when i click the tile to play the video nothing comes up.

Are these cameras really nothing but a live feed without the subscription? or is something else going on here.

If you do NOT have a Nest Aware subscription, you only get photo snapshots in your history, except for the newer Google Nest cameras released starting in the fall of 2021, where you get event video history for the most recent 3 hours. This is Google Nest's description of what you get (scroll down). (I'm just another customer.)
