@ISG , you thermostat is set up for a Heat Pump with auxiliary heat and emergency heat. You will need a Nest Learning Thermostat and Your wires in use are

R, W2/X, W1, Y, G, O, B

R - Red Wire, 24VAC Power Input, place on Nest R or Rc

W2/X Black Wire, Emergency Heat, place on Nest *

W1 White Wire, Auxiliary Heat, place on Nest W2/AUX

Y Yellow Wire, Compressor Relay, place on Nest Y1

G Green Wire, Blower Fan Relay, place on Nest G

O Orange Wire, Change Over Valve, place on Nest OB

B Blue Wire, 24 VAC Power Common

@BrianH , aWhen you are logged in, and you open a test box to reply, you will see a camera icon at the top of the text box. Tap that camera and pick your pictures.

I have a heat pump for AC and heating. Not connected to the HVAC. Will Google Nest work with this configuration?

my system is a heat pump for AC and cooling with emergency heating. Is this compatible woth Google nest. Also , I wonder if I don't need the learning version as with a heat pump you don't want the temptation vary that much.

Yes indeed your system is compatible with the Nest Thermostat. Your wires in use are:

R; red wire, 24VAC power

Y1; yellow wire, Compressor Relay - Heat and Cool

E; brown wire, Emergency Heat

W2; white wire, Auxiliary Heat

O; Orange Wire, Reversing Valve relay

You have a blue wire not assigned. You should consider using this wire for the 24VAC Power Common. This will require you going to the Air Handler and make sure the blue wire is connected to the C terminal their. As well.

@ISG, you have a heat pump, which is electrical, and your indoor air handler is your forced air and must have an LP burner type furnace connected to your air handler. In this case you have set the Auxiliary heat to never be used. I am just checking, do you have a LP gas furnace?

I have a left over wire - Brown 'E' and no where to put it. The Google Nest only has 6 wiring slots.

What turned on - I get a Error code : E294 - no R - yet it is definitely connected.

Any ideas?

@BrianH , on that thermostat you have, the single * is the only programable function connection. It can only be programmed for a single function. And your Nest Model does not support your system configuration. You need a Nest Learning Thermostat in order to support heat pump with auxiliary heating And Emergency heating.

If the E and W2 wire go to the same place on the Air Handler, the Nest Thermostat can activate the Aux strips on its own when you select "emergency heat" in the app. This allows you to discard the E wire and use the Nest Thermostat and not the learning stat.

It hot here - thus am giving up. I called my heating guy, returning the nest and having an Ecobee installed tomorrow AM.

Thank you CW. This is a new house I just bought in the NC mountains. When I’m back up there this weekend I will check. Any advice on how I can tell if I have a gas furnace or not? Sorry for being so naive.

@ISG, if you have a gas furnace there would be a small window on the front of the furnace where you should see a blue glowing flame. Also, you might smell like a little bit of gas when your heating is running.
