Replacing a Honeywell RTH6350D1000

Hi! I want to try to replace my Honeywell thermostat with the this beautiful Nest product that I bought. I would like to do it myself if I can but I am unsure of some of the wiring.

On my Honeywell RTH6350D1000 I have this - I don't know if I can upload a picture

left to right:

Conventional

Y2 W2 G W Not used. Y R Rc

Beige wire. White Wire. Green Wire. Orange Wire. {none}. Yellow Wire. Red Wire Jumper from R to Rc

E Aux G O/B Not Used Y R Rc

Heat Pump

So I have six wires and a jumper (i\I am sure the jumper is to be removed right?

My question is where to put the wires on my Nest:

Y G

C R

W *OB

I think 5 of 6 are obvious to me - I am concerned where to place the one that is cuurently conjected to the Y2/E - where on the Nest do I connect that one?

I will appreciate any help you all can offer. Thanks in advance!

Hi drdan9999,

Thanks for bringing this up here in the Google Nest community. We’re excited for your new Nest Thermostat, and I'd be happy to take a look at it for you. You can follow the steps and wiring diagram below:

Beige wire: this is an emergency heating wire. The Nest Thermostat 2020 is not yet designed to have emergency heating working together with a heat pump with auxiliary heating. What we suggest is not to attach it to the Nest thermostat (cover the copper end of the wire and tuck it inside the whole thing).
White wire to W Terminal
Green wire to G Terminal
Orange wire to the */OB terminal
Yellow wire to the Y terminal
red wire to the R terminal and remove the jumper from R to Rc.

Thank you so very much for your reply! I am excited to try that! As I stated ,I was fairly confident in all the wire placement but the beige (emergency). No luck so far. It tells me that I need the nest power connector or a common wire. As I was looking at the wires, there is one more wire that I had not spoken of, because it was hidden away and covered in tape. It is a blue wire. Might that be a common wire? If so, then I guess I would use that? If you say that is not the one and that I need to get the power connector, I will do that. It does offer that to me for free.

Please let me know what you think and I will order that. I'm going to leave it hooked up as it is right now with the power for the air conditioner and heater turned off. Fortunately, I don't think I will need the heater this week. So I will wait for your response and see what your news your expertise offers! Again, Iappreciate you working me through this! Thanks again!

Thanks for the update, and I’m sorry to hear that you’re having problems with the installation. I was really hoping for a smooth process with this, but don’t worry, we’ll help you out.

Let’s get a closer look before we conclude if the blue wire is a common wire. Take a photo of your HVAC control board and send it to us.

Also, if I may ask, do you have a multimeter?

Hmm. Where do I find the HVAC Control Board? LOL Sorry if that is such a rookie quiestion, but I am! I am not sure if I still have a multimeter I will check in the meantime.

No worries, we all start somewhere! Typically, the HVAC control board is located on an inside wall or, most likely, near your heating and air conditioning equipment.

I don't have a panel on an inside wall. My system is split. There's one piece outside, and then there's another piece under the house. I think what I'm going to do is go ahead and order the nest learning thermostat. And reading about that and looking at the wiring for that, it shows that it should probably work for my unit. Does not need a common wire or so it says.

I should have that unit in a few days and I will try to hook that up. I will let you know how that turns out. I really do appreciate all the advice you have given me so far. I just don't know enough to go looking inside the control panel. If I see something done once, then I have confidence to do it a second time, but without having ever done it, I don't think I have the nerve to do that! Lol thanks again for your advice so far. I will fill you in on my propgress!

All., We can close this with my many thanks to those who helped. I went ahead and got the Nest Learning Thermostat and it works beautifully on my system.
