Nest Learning Thermostat - No Display

Hello,

I recently purchased a house and it was equipped with a Nest Learning Thermostat. We have had the house for over 2 weeks now although I have not yet moved in as we are fixing/updating the house prior.

The thermostat was always working for 2 weeks but yesterday we noticed there was no display. I detached the Thermostat and charged it with a USB cable, the Google icon displayed and it requested me to connect the thermostat back to the base. I let it charge for about 2 hours and went back to the house the next morning to re-connect it and the display is still black.

Since I did not purchase this product, I am not familiar with how it works and troubleshooting. Can someone steer me in the right directions as to what steps to take next to get the display to work again?

Also, will the heat still turn on despite the Nest display not working?

Hi - this appears likely to be a power/charging issue with your Nest - sorry to hear you are having these issues with a new house!
Here is the expected wiring layout for the Nest:

W1 - White wire (usually) - Furnace/Heat control
Y1 - AC/Compressor control (usually yellow wire)
G - Unconditioned fan control (usually a green wire)
C - Common wire (usually blue wire) - carries 24V power back to Nest Thermostat.

Rh -Furnace power (usually a red wire)

**Single stage furnace and AC/compressor

Please also check the power level of the Nest itself (Settings -->Equipment -->Power) - The power level needs to be at least 3.85 V to have wifi connectivity and control the furnace/AC. If you can't get to these settings as the Nest screen is blank/does not come on - please detach it and plug into a microUSB for at least 1 hour and then reattach to the baseplate.

Thank you for your reply. My wiring looks to be on Par with what you suggested with the exception of the yellow wire you mentioned, I have an additional white wire going to Y1 instead. Also, I have an additional Red wire going to Rc.

Also, if I don’t have display on the thermostat I can’t check the power levels, right? I charged the unit last night for a couple hours but then it sat overnight so that charge may have drained. I will try to charge it again tonight.

Thanks for chiming in, @jb76.

@awakeford, yikes! I'm sorry to hear that your thermostat still appears to have blank display though you've charged it for two hours already. Let's see what's going on. A few questions:

Are the power breakers on, and do you receive power to your home?
Is the thermostat's display seated properly?
Are all the wires of your thermostat seated firmly in its terminals (with no loose or exposed wires)?
Did you charge the thermostat display using a micro-USB cable?
If so, does the micro-USB cable work with other devices?
Did you plug in the thermostat display to a working power outlet?
Do you have other similar Nest thermostats? Have you tried to swap their displays? If so, how did it go?

Hello,

thank you for your response and recommendations. I solved my issue!

I eventually got error code E72, and was troubleshooting that for a while. I had some family members over to help spackle and sand the walls and one of them mistakenly flipped the Emergency Gas Shut Off switch, so there was no power going to the system.

A couple days of stress for no reason, haha!
I appreciate everyone’s help.
