Why is it that all of the sudden my Nest Thermostat is registering a much higher room temp then what is recorded in the room on a separate thermometer? By 9 degrees. I have restarted the thermostat, not change. WiFi strong, everything else seems working fine. I have read that this is a problem and could be a short in the base, causing it to heat up and mess with the temp sensor. Any suggestions for a fix aside from tossing this expensive thing in the trash?

Hi bcgoods,

Yikes! I'm sorry to hear that your thermostat is reading your room temperature nine degrees higher than the actual room temperature. Let me take a look at this for you. A few questions:

When was the thermostat installed?

Where did you install your thermostat?

Do you have other active Nest Thermostats? If yes, do they show the same issue?

When did the issue start?

Get the signal strength value of your Nest Learning Thermostat by going to its Settings > Technical Info > Network > Signal strength. Also, if you have a room thermometer, take a photo of the thermometer next to the Nest thermostat. Both the thermometer and thermostat screens should be visible in the photo and show the difference in each other’s readouts.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Zoe

The Thermostat was installed last March in this location, which is in the 2nd-floor loft area of the house. Yes, I have one other Nest Learning thermostat in the house, which is located on the first-floor hallway. This issue started about 10 days ago. The signal strength is strong.

Since this happened, I have tested the temperature of the back plate of the thermostat. It is a warm 71 degrees according to an infrared temp gauge that I have. I have reset the Nest to factory defaults and reprogrammed it. It still has the same problem altho the temps now are off by about 5-6 degrees. I have both thermostats on my Nest app. I would love to continue using Nest, yet if this can't be resolved, I am going to consider buying two new thermostats (Honeywell) that our HVAC person recommends. He says they find there are more problems with Nests and so they don't recommend them anymore.

There is no options for me to upload pictures to you, but I will share a link to the photos via Google pics

https://photos.app.goo.gl/MtW3FVPub4a3LSWD7

Any help would be appreciated

Hi there,

Thanks for getting back to us, and I'm sorry for the late response. Could you follow these?

Restart the thermostat.

On the thermostat’s display, go to Settings > Reset > Restart. The thermostat takes a few moments to restart and boot back up.

Turn on Sunblock.

On the thermostat display, go to Settings > Nest Sense > Sunblock.

Select Yes to make sure Sunblock is on.

Check if the thermostat is near a heat source. Nest Thermostats in the U.S. and Canada are typically on a wall. Check if the thermostat is near:

Air vents that direct warm air

Appliances (that includes large televisions)

Electrical outlets

Plumbing (hot water pipes in old buildings are frequently not insulated)

Warm air in the wall

Other potential heat sources

Regards,

Zoe
