Solved: Remote sensor won't connect to Nest thermostat

Thermostat is a 3rd generation learning thermostat with a previously connected remote sensor. While trying to solve an issue with "home/away assist," I managed to disconnect the thermostat from the app. I tried following the steps the last time I had an issue with a remote sensor to no avail. I then uninstalled the app, restarted the phone, and reinstalled the app. Still no success following the same steps. I then found a series of posts that incorporated removing the remote sensor battery for 5 minutes. Still no luck. Here are the steps I followed.

1. (from the app) Settings > Remove thermostat

2. (at thermostat) > Settings > Reset (rightmost option) > Restart

3. Remove battery from the remote sensor (must be out at least 5 minutes)

4. (at thermostat) Settings > Nest App > Reset Connection > Reset

5. (at thermostat) Settings > Nest App > QR Code

6. (from app) Add Product > Scan thermostat QR code from previous step > wait several minutes > select "Already Installed" > connect to wifi . select name for thermostat, select safety temperatures , etc.

Thermostat is now connected to the app and can be controlled from the app

7. (from app) Settings > Add product > Scan QR code of remote sensor on the inside cover

8. Reinstall battery in remote sensor

9. After introduction to the remote sensor, click "Next"

At this point, I get an error message of "Something went wrong." For pairing, the sensor is less than 4 feet from the thermostat, so moving it closer does nothing. If I hit 'try again', the error message re-appears in a fraction of a second.

HELP ! I am at a loss as to what else I can try. Very frustrating.

Ahha - I finally got it to work. I had previously checked the battery and it was reading 3.03 v., which is slightly above the rated value of 3.0. Just for kicks, I went through the process with a brand new battery (reading 3.28 v). This time I got a notification to remove the tab from the sensor and click "Next". And it worked.

Note, in all my failed attempts I had not screwed on the back of the remote sensor. This time I screwed the back on the remote sensor before attempting to connect it to the thermostat. It is possible that the remote sensor requires the back to be attached (screwed in) in order to start the pairing. Don't know - just guessing - and not about to do some experimentation now that it is working.
