I currently have a Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) and would like to add a temperature sensor. Do I need to have a zoned system to use a sensor? Which temperature sensor works with the 3rd Gen thermostat?

Thanks

I also have and use the Nest app.

No. Gen1 sensors work good with nest 3 thermostat. You just activate it and assign it to the thermostat using nest app. Then place it in whatever room you want. In the nest app you will see the sensor under the thermostat. You can then select which device the heating system will use to bring the room to that temperature.

Thank you. I assume it will work in the cooling scenario too? Also, will Gen 2 sensors work with the nest 3 thermostat?

My pleasure. I think so although I can not be sure since my system is only heating. Not sure about gen 2 since no experience. Although I did read a post that stated the gen 2 sensors are backwards compatible and will work with the gen 3 thermostat.
