Hi RenSmith,

Thanks for reaching out here in the community! I’d be happy to help with your concerns about how to install the E and W2 wires on the Nest thermostat.

Based on the information, your system is compatible with all generations of Nest Learning Thermostats. Usually, the E wire goes into the star (*) terminal and the W2 wire into the Aux W2 terminal. For reference, you can check out these articles: Nest thermostat star connector and Identify a thermostat wire.

To effectively assist you, I'd like to ask for the following information:

What is the model of your Nest thermostat? Here’s a helpful article about how to identify your thermostat model.

What type of HVAC system do you have (conventional or heat pump system)?

Do you have auxiliary heat or emergency heat on your HVAC system?

Would you mind sharing a picture of the previous wiring installation and the current one on the Nest thermostat?

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,
