There is a way round this, as I have mentioned on the forum many times.

You say Display 1 the original, connects to the Heat Linkeven after you reset and then at the language page?

Even after you remove from the base plate?

So my nest 3rd gen was replaced as it failed to connect to the internet.

Replacement 3rd gen nest turned up and having a right nightmare getting it to connect to the heat link.

I removed old nest from app, factory reset old nest and connected new nest. Think I have now tried everything. Numerous factory resets of both nest and heat link. Moved nest literally so it’s holding hands with the link. No.

hold heat link button down for 25 seconds, 30 seconds, what feels like an hour! Blue light rapidly flashes for a few seconds and then blue light pulses (apparently this is connecting mode?). Not once did it go yellow to say it was disconnected. Which is odd, as the old nest was reset (but light on old nest is still flashing).

feels like even though the old nest is reset to factory completely the heat line wants to connect to it. Like some lovers of old who

will not let go.

Attempt to connect new nest, get the fail message every time. Put in 6 digit code from link again, failed again. Turn on old nest from its reset… links instantly. It’s like the heat link has my old nest in its memory! Tried full power off, reset again. Nope nothing.

new nest can connect to internet, can be found on app, just won’t connect to heat link.

what on earth am I doing wrong, it’s driving me mad.

Just too add the old nest doesn’t appear to do a full reset. It does reset and takes away time and date etc but it still has the WiFi stored in it and connects to the link straight away. It’s like it’s not actually doing a full reset.

The issue you now have is the Display is in a confussed state due to the '' Numerous factory resets'' you have done I think. I have covered this topic that many times I have lost count, and a brief search on the forum will show other solutions.

The Heat Link flashing yellow is of no importance, all you need is a steady blue pulse light. This is achieved by keeping the Heat Link button pressed for well over 30+ seconds. I usually tell people to just keep pressed for about 45 to make sure. After all you want the setup to be correct. That needs to be done twice.

Your original Display is exactly as you mention, a matched pair unlike the new display you have changed to. The new one isn't matched to your old Heat Link, hence you have to input the 6 digit code. By reconnecting your old display to the Heat Link will always connect easily as mentioned it's a matched pair.

Where are you now with

Display 1 - Original

Display 2 - New

Heat Link

I have the blue flashing light on the heat link and when I put the 6 digit code in it’s just keeps failing to connect. Comes up with H71 code after trying to connect for a while.

display 1 - reset (at input language screen)

display 2 - went through set up, put heat link in to connect mode with blue flashing light. Entered 6 digit code. H71 code. Try again H71 code.

Display 1 seems to automatically connect to heat link even after reset. Seems to pair on its own. Maybe I need to reset it and put it way out of range of the heat link.

I can't see that as full settings reset removes everything.

You need to go settings - reset - reset all. You will then erase everything and end up at the language screen.

Then remove the display from the base, that will be factory reset.

The display cannot reconnect to anything unless you place back on base plate and go through the setup process. Obviously you don't want to do that.

So did full reset and got to language screen.
Took off base and put ti one side

put new nest on base

went through set up

held down button in heat link for 40 seconds and flashes blue (initially flashed very fast for a few seconds and then slowly flashes blue)

Went to connect new heat link and entered the 6 digit code

says heat link connecting for a few mins but blue circle going round

then says failed to connect wirelessly to heat link. Nest.com/h71 error

tried this cycle a few times and still says the same.

they said just replace the nest display and send old one back but might try install the new heat link they sent and try again.

Sounds about right as the new display is confused as mentioned before. However is the original still trying to connect as you said?

Are you saying you have a new heat link that came with the new display as a set?

They sent a whole set but just said to change the display and return the rest with the old display.

The odd thing is if I reset up the old display it just connects without any issue and doesn’t even ask for the heat link code.

For heavens sake, change the heat link and you have a matched pair as I mentioned in my first reply! Then they will pair without the code.

Hi JayX2A,

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry to hear that you're having inconvenience connecting your Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Gen to your Heat link and you got the H71 error code. Don't worry help is here.

For now, I'd like to share some steps regarding these:

Pair a replacement Heat Link

On the H71 error code screen on your thermostat, select Replace Heat Link.

Wait until the light on the Heat Link is blinking blue then select Continue.

Enter the pairing code and tap Connect. Check the bottom of Heat Link for the 6-character code.

Please take a look at this article: How to pair the Nest thermostat and Heat Link - Google Nest Help.

If you get another error code or message, let me know to help you out!

Best regards,

Rusell.
