It sounds like you have early model Nest Thermostat; one that uses AA batteries. Your nest thermostat uses power from the HVAC equipment to augment the batteries thus making them last longer. Since it was not attached and simply stuck in a box, the thermostat was using the batteries heavenly. So much so it drained the AA batteries.
Make sure to replace the AA batteries and ensure your HVAC system uses a C wire along with the R wire.

Hello,

I just moved from Washington to California, meaning my Nest was in a box for 2 weeks. When I put it up today, it gave me a low-power message. Does it just need time to reset, or is there an issue? My apartment is brand new, so I doubt it's a wiring issue. I did change the battery. Any insight would be helpful.
