I see my second generation nest will no longer be supported. How often is this going to come up. If I buy a new one how many years will I get out of it? I know this is way different in technology but my last thermostat was installed in 1950 so I would hope to get more than ten years out of these. Sounds like it will still work but degrade over time without updates.

I was completely surprised. Awful they will not support perfectly fine working thermostats. Would love to know answer to how long if you get one.

The thermostat will continue working, but the app connection will no longer work. So in that sense it's the same as our 1950s thermostats, which of course didn't have apps.

Still, a more consumer friendly option would be to keep the current app in the store as a legacy app, and simply not provide further bug fixes - use at your own risk.
