topic When is it charged? in Nest Thermostats

I just got a replacement Nest thermostat because the one I got last year stopped talking to my router. I attached it to a wall socket with a USB cord and iphone charger, the little green light started blinking, and 8 or so hours later, it’s still blinking. I was under the impression that when the device was fully charged either the light would stop blinking or go out completely. I can’t believe it isn’t fully charged after all this time, but the light does what it does. Can I just declare victory at this point and continue setting it up (tomorrow; it’s close to bed time for this old codger)?

Hello @basil1229,

Thanks for posting on the community. I understand that your replacement Nest thermostat is flashing a green light after about eight hours of charging, and you're wondering if you can proceed with the setup. That's a good observation, as a blinking green light is usually a good sign that the thermostat is in the middle of a software update, starting up, or restarting. This process typically only lasts for a minute or two before the display turns on.

However, if the light continues to flash a green light for more than 5 minutes and the thermostat remains unresponsive, you should try the following steps to get it working properly.

Step 1: Restart the Thermostat

The most effective step is to perform a simple restart.

Press and hold the thermostat ring down for 10 seconds to restart it.

Step 2: Check the USB Connection

If the issue persists, you can check if the thermostat is being detected by a computer. This helps us rule out an issue with the USB port or cable itself.

Connect the Nest thermostat to a computer using a micro-USB cable.

Check to see if a "Nest" drive appears on your computer.

If the Nest drive doesn't mount, restart both the thermostat and your computer.

Step 3: Test with a Different Cable and Port

If the Nest drive still doesn't appear, try a different USB cable, a different USB port on your computer, or even a different computer if you have one available. This will help you confirm if the issue is with the cable or the port.

If the computer detects another USB device but not your thermostat, please manually eject the other device and then reconnect your Nest thermostat to the computer.

I'm confident that one of these steps will resolve the issue for you. Please let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Kevin

The computer always “saw” the thermostat, the green light never stopped blinking, so after several hours, I disconnected it from the computer and after about five minutes it flashed a message that the battery was out of gas and it was shutting down, and that’s what it did. I reported this to Google’s on line support and miraculously enough, got a relatively timely reply. They told me to send it back, Fedex told me me it was delivered this morning and now once again I have to go through the whole dreary process of replacing the original faulty thermostat, which the one I initially posted about was intended to replace.

This all happened before you posted your response, for which I thank you.
