Why is there a gold settings wheel on my nest thermostat please

That is Seasonal Savings, which is a free feature for users in the US and parts of Canada. Here's a blog post about the change.

If you’d like to stop Seasonal Savings altogether, you can. In the Nest app, go to your thermostat History. If Seasonal Savings is running, you will see how many days remain and also a Stop button.
