Thermostat switches off

I noticed my 3rd gen thermostat was offline. That's when I realised the thermostat is switched off. I detached the thermostat and connected to a mini usb. The thermostat booted and after a few seconds displayed the message to connect to the base again. After attaching to the base the thermostat worked for around 30 minutes and then switched off again. We haven't faced this problem in the last 2.5 years that we have had this thermostat.

The heat link was dead. Received H72 error on the thermostat when charged with USB. the thermostat is still under warranty and nest will replace it.

The question is why did the heat link die? and how can users prevent this from happening again. the heat link is hidden away in a corner and is not handled by humans on a day to day basis. For a device like this to die all of sudden is problematic. Users cant control its maintenance and for expensive product like Nest Thermostat an overall life of just about 2 years doesn't justify the cost.

What I will really like to know is, How can i ensure that my replacement product doesn't die after the 90 days warranty period.

Sorry for the late reply. These type of issues may happen if you're experiencing power cuts. You shouldn't have any issues with your replacement.

While power cuts may cause this issue, it's not certain. The Heat Link was designed to work as long as possible. However, like other electronics, they might fail. That's why we're doing our best to send out warranty replacements as soon as possible.

Electronic devices fail over the years and for a definite reason. This one, a high end product, failed within 2 years and root cause is unknown. Only badly designed/manufactured electronic devices can fail so early for no apparent reason. The nest thermostat that failed, replaced a traditional thermostat that worked well for 14 years and is not yet broken. It also costs a fraction of what the nest thermostat costs.

I believe, I have to correct myself here. This not bad design. I believe this is planned obsolescence. My nest doorbell just went kaput. Unfortunately it is past its warranty period so I am left with a paper weight now

The thermostat broke as designed. Fortunately for me it happened within warranty period and I got a replacement. Expecting the replacement to breakdown in the next 2, 2.5 years. My doorbell though broke 2 months after warranty period and I am left with a paper weight worth 279 euros.
