Does the Nest Learning Thermostat manage the variable speed capability of a Trane XV20i or does it in essence convert it to a 2 stage system?

So, when the article says it will run the variable speed fan at a single speed am I correct in interpreting this as meaning that I will lose the benefit of the variable speed HVAC if I use the Nest Learning Thermostat with the unit?
