Post a picture of the original thermostat's wiring here.

The N261 error means the Nest is sensing low power on the C wire. This is normally caused by not having a C wire installed or it's not connected to the furnace/air handler.

Your thermostat needs a C wire

These steps cover the following help codes: E1, E297, N261, N260

You might see this help code for one of the reasons below:

The C wire isn’t providing enough power to your thermostat.

Your thermostat might need a C wire or the Nest Power Connector to provide it with dedicated power.

If you're installing the Nest Power Connector and you get an E297 help code, your thermostat needs an update. On the thermostat screen, select Settings > Software> Update.

If you’ve already installed the Nest Power Connector, you might need to update the wiring info in the app.

Home app

Open the Home app.

Touch and hold your device's tile.

At the top right, tap Settings > Thermostat > Wiring > Update wiring.

Update any incorrect wiring information.

Hi, system does not seem to be cooling the house. System worked fine with previous thermostat but since installing nest, the air being blown out doesn’t seem cool and my system ran for 4 straight hours and the temp didn’t change at all. Seems like maybe the fan is running but not cooling. I am getting a “N261” alert.

The C wire is connected in both. I reinstalled the old thermostat to see if the compressor would kick back on and it did. So nothing wrong with the wire connection it seems but instead for some reason the issue seems to be with nest device.

Sorry, I failed to mention, that I found out that with the nest thermostat installed, the compressor wouldn’t kick on, and therefore wasn’t actually cooling. But with the old thermostat, the compressor kicks on and works fine. And both had the c wire connected

Everything appears to be wired correctly.

Did your old thermostat happen to have batteries installed?

I would look at the terminal block on the control board in the furnace/air handler and verify that everything is connected there like it is at the thermostat.

C wires are mostly just used to power the thermostat when the thermostat is the programmable type and if there is no C wire, they use batteries.
