We recently had our heat pump replaced on our house. We had a 3rd gen Nest installed as well by the installer, and the unit had a c wire included as well. We received a message saying that the room that this nest was in had reached a dangerous heat level, I went to check the room, and the door handle was hot to the touch and the nest had turned the hearing unit on, on a day where the outside temperature was 87f. The room temperature had gone up to 115 degrees, and I had to switch off the heat pump at the breaker. We have 2 other nest units in our house attached to conventional HVAC systems and have never experienced anything like that before. We called our installer who checked the unit and confirmed that the wiring was correct and the correct voltage was coming through. A week later the unit spiked again, sending a warning that the temp had gone up to 109F. This time the installer put in a brand new nest. Its clear this unit had a battery failure and tried to charge itself by turning on the heat (why it would go into heat mode on a hot spring day is beyond me), but its clear the battery process is flawed and a secondary back up system needs to be incorporated into this thermostat. Nest needs to monitor units for low battery issues and warn homeowners of this possibility. I will be contacting the consumer product safety board on this issue.
