Nest Thermostat & Ruud/Rheem

Hello! I have a gas Ruud [R801SA050314ZSB] furnace and a Rheem [RCF2414STAMCA] air conditioner setup. I changed out the old dial thermostat, which has yellow, white, green, blue, and red wires however the blue wasn’t used and runs to the furnace where it’s not connected. I keep getting the low battery alert on the Nest thermostat and have to keep taking it off and charging it.

I opened the furnace door and looked at the control board. On the C terminal, there is a black wire that runs out and to a Safety Switch SS2 that is connected to the Rheem unit. There is also the unconnected end of the unused blue wire at the thermostat. My question is, can I connect the blue wire to the C terminal on the control board along with the black wire that’s already there?

Yes that is exactly what you need to do. Mine was the same way and I connected it and it keeps charged just fine. One issue you may have is if you go through the set up and it ask what wires you have connected. Do not put the C wire as having it. Just say the red,yellow,green and white. Orherwise you will get an error message like R294 or something like that. I went through multiple forums before I found out how to make it work. Simply state you have those 4 hooked up even though you have 5.
