I have two Google Nest Thermostats that I installed about a month ago when we purchased our home. We only had red and white thermostat wires available, so I installed two power connectors at the zone control board. Both units were functioning perfectly until today.

I received a Home app notification saying my upstairs unit was offline. I went to check on it and it was extremely hot to the touch. I took it off the wall and removed the batteries. After it had cooled down, I put them back in and reattached it. Nothing happened. I tried two new, fresh 1.5v AAA batteries. Nothing. I swapped the batteries from the working Nest into the dead one. Still nothing. Google support said the unit was faulty and set up a replacement.

I was able to check its last stats and saw a voltage of 3.03. I was under the impression that it was supposed to be 3.6-3.7 to function, but I never saw any connectivity issues prior to this. Out of curiosity, I checked the downstairs unit and found it, too, is operating at around 3.08v. The unit detects the power connector and throws no errors.

I’ve since combed over the support doc from Google and am wondering if the 3.6-3.7 voltage applies only to the learning and E models and not the AAA battery powered Nest. It specifically makes note of internal rechargeable batteries when discussing voltage.

Is it likely that I just had a faulty unit and everything is okay otherwise, or are the numbers on the functioning unit cause for concern?

Battery Status: Good

Voltage: 3.085v

Impedance: 696mOhm

Connected to: W(P)-R

VIN: 34.13V

lin: 385(W)

PS: W-385, WP-18

Power Connector Detected

We appreciate all the details you've included in your post. I'd like to verify if you're using a Nest Power Connector or you have a C (common) wire already connected?

Regards,

Ryan
