Hi everyone

Just got my first Nest Thermostat. I have a pretty fixed schedule so have set this up. However, sometimes I return home later than usual and would like to use the app to delay heating switch on time. However, I can't see a way for it to only be for that one event - which would mean I'd need to remember to go back and change it again.

Am I missing something? This was the main reason I got the thermostat!

Thanks

BB

Hi there. Thanks for taking time to reply. I am somewhat amazed by this! So the only way to do it is to change it manually that evening and then remember to change it back within 6 days? People of Google, here's a great suggestion for an upgrade!

In the meantime would a workaround be to switch the heating off completely using the app and then switch it back on as I near home? That way times don't get changed?

What about using the GPS locator to keep it off until I get in? I didn't really think about using this as presumably it only switches on once you walk through the door, so you come home to a cold house?

What do you think?

Brucie

Brucie,

I have a very hectic schedule and so I set my AC to a setting that is conserving energy. When I am done for the work fig the day I open my nest app and set it a temperature I want.

having said this, the value of a learning thermostat is it learns how long it takes to make your house hotter or cooler to what you want. So what I had to do was when I checked the temperature and set it it comes back and tells me how long it will take to get there. So I learned how long before I head home that I make the change.

Hi Mel

Thanks for the messages! While CoolingWizard provided a sort of workaround, it still doesn't seem very satisfactory to me - as if you forget to change the time back then you'll be stuck with the new time. Really a way to over ride one event only would be the best way to solve my issue - this is something my old programmable thermostat could do (although not remotely). Any further assistance you can provide would be much appreciated

Let me know if you need more info

BW

Brucie

Hi BrucieBonus,

Thanks for getting back to us and you're always welcome.

A quick question: what thermostat do you have? You can check which model you have through this link.

I suggest changing your Nest Thermostat's temperature manually using the app to override the scheduled heating.

Hi Mel

Thanks for your reply. I have a Nest Thermostat E 1.2.

Can I clarify - if I turn the temp down using the app, will that mean that the new temp will continue until the next programmed change of temp at which point the thermostat will revert back to the pre programmed temps and times?

Also if I use Home/Away assist can this be set only to one phone and if the heating came on (programmed) but no one was home would it switch off? And switch on once it detected someone coming in?

thanks

Brucie

Hi folks,,

I'm sorry for the late reply. I definitely wanted to stop by to answer your questions.

Thanks @Jhonleanmel for the assistance.

@BrucieBonus, technically, your Nest thermostat will only follow the schedules that you create. So if you change the temperature manually, it overrides the temperature at the specific time and if the target temperature has been met, it'll turn off your system. Then, the temperature will change on the next schedule.

Lastly, Home/Away Assist determines when someone left and returned to the house using both the Nest thermostat sensor and your phone location. So if you're away and no one's at home, your thermostat should switch off or be set in Eco mode, but when it detects movement, it'll override the settings. Have a look at this article and let us know if you need more help.

Best regards,

thanks Mark for replying, that's much clearer. We have several household members, so as long as they are all set up on the Nest, then I presume it will just detect who comes in first/goes out last and switch the heating to eco mode accordingly. Meaning we shouldn't have to play around with the programmed times and temps? This would be excellent news Donna

Hi Donna,

Good question. You got it! And yes, your Nest thermostat is still learning, and there's no need for you to make any major changes. As long as it's convenient for you and your family, just let it stay with the current programs unless you would like to disable them.
