Had 6 wire to old therm. Matched wires by color to nest until tan wire was left & *OB not used so put it there. OK?

I have error E294 showing & am unable to choose settings, heat etc.

We don't have a Nest Thermostat, but you can find the error codes here (E294 = "R wire is required"):
