Unfortunately you would need to set up the boiler as the primary heat, with the W1 terminal calling the boiler to startup. and if the hot water heat is not warming the house up, the heat pump would have to be set up as the secondary auxiliary heat.

Now, here is the concern, you would have to have a heat pump that is designed as a heat mode by default. If on the other hand it is a default cooling system, the auxiliary heat approach will not work for your needs.

I am in the process of installing a outdoor boiler system. I currently have a heat pump to heat and cool. I am adding a heat exchanger in the duct work for the hot water. My question is will a NEST be able to do the following.

1. First call for heat just turn on fan. SInce there will be hot water always circulating through exchanger.

2. If it doesnt satisfy after a while call for heat pump to turn on.

3. if that doesnt satisfy then turn on the emergenct heat coils.

i havent purchased a NEST yet just exploring the options.
