Where can I find clear information on how target temperatures are chosen during Rush Hour events?

We are in Los Angeles, CA. It seems like most households set their cooling target to 78. Even though we have PV panels and battery, our standard (scheduled) setting is 80-82F in order to minimize energy use.

It is becoming more and more upsetting that during Rush Hour, Nest sets the target to 86F which is quite uncomfortable. Are all households being set to 86F? Or are we being penalized because we try to maximize what we deliver to the grid at all times (by Nest adding a fixed amount to whatever the non-Rush Hour setting is)?

Hi, Naftaturbo,

I'm only a fellow user (also in LA -- Northridge, specifically) so I can't give you an authoritative answer. But anecdotally, my Rush Hour setting has consistently been 78 degrees. (My regular setting is 74 degrees.)

As far as how the Rush Hour temperature is chosen, I always assumed that was being done by DWP. Have you tried inquiring with them?

Hi Pumpirony:

That's interesting. Lends some credence to the thought that its a simple "scheduled setting + 4°. I've typically targeted ~80°-82° and I've been seeing Rush Hour settings at 86° and higher.

I have a query into LADWP but so far haven't received a response. I actually think that LADWP contracts with the various "smart thermostat" manufacturers to manage the process and send them results. But we'll see.

   Thanks again,,,

Hey everyone,

Thanks for being here in the Google Nest Community.

I'd like to jump in here and share with you this Rush Hour Reward program information. The target temperature is being managed and calculated by your energy provider and still, you're in control with your thermostat by manually selecting what's the most comfortable temperature for you.

Regards,

Ryan
