Connect old 1st gen thermostat to nest app/wifi?

I have an old 1st gen nest thermostat I installed and can't connect to the nest app.

Too old for a QR code.

Following the directions on the app to add a device, this device doesn't have an option under Settings for Nest App to get a 6 digit code to connect.

Any suggestions?

The QR code and setup key for thermostats setup with the Nest app are shown on the display, not printed on the device itself. Try these steps:

If the thermostat had a previous owner and hasn’t been reset yet, factory reset the thermostat.
If you haven’t already, download the Nest app on a phone or tablet.
On the Nest app home screen, tap the Settings cog.
Tap Add product. The app will switch to a camera view to scan the thermostat’s QR code.
On the thermostat, press it to open the quick view menu and tap the Settings cog.
Turn the ring to select Nest app and press to open it.
Select QR code. Your thermostat will show you a unique QR code to scan with the app. If it doesn't, tap Continue without scanning in the app and select Get entry key on your thermostat instead.
Follow the remaining steps in the Nest app.

Update- I was able to connect to my wifi network, and the nest updated and now had an option under settings for Nest App. However, when I try to retrieve the entry key to enter into the app, it circles for a long time then says there is an error.

There is no option for a QR code that I can find.

Any other suggestions to accessing my nest with the app?

Now it's connected to Wifi, try restarting it perhaps?

Go to Settings cog > Reset > Restart

Will I lose all the day and time hearing and cooling settings then?

I did the restart without losing settings and same thing- here is what it actually says:

there was a problem connection to the service. Try again later.

Are you using any kind of VPN or proxy on your phone or router? If so try disabling those?

You might use a VPN or proxy for work purposes as an example.

No VPN currently- I had NordVPN this summer on my phone and laptop when I traveled overseas, but not using it any more and never installed on the home network.

@epdeede, thanks for trying the steps. It's possible that your Nest Thermostat is having an issue with communicating with the servers. Could you also try rebooting your router?
