Hi I just opened my new nest thermostat. I was carefully unboxing and removed the protective film. I was trying to remove another piece of projective film that’s not coming off. Now I’m not sure it’s supposed to but it’s all scratched and looks awful. What can I do?

That isn’t a second protective film, that’s the easily scratched sensor for the Nest. You’ll see numerous complaints on different forums from people complaining about the way it looks and it’s durability. Because it is a sensor, it’s problematic that it’s scratched. You should try to exchange it if you can.

Same issue there.

Are we all sure it's not just a plastic film to peel off as we did on the main part of the screen?

Even this other post is unclear:
https://support.google.com/googlenest/thread/14002218/does-anyone-know-if-the-1-2-moon-plastic-piece-come-off-i-removed-the-sticker-but-piece-left?hl=en

The "specialist" says there:

Upon unboxing the Nest Thermostat, there's a plastic film attached at the bottom part of the display that covers the sensor. It also has a label stating that you should remove it after you successfully attached it to the base.

If it cannot be removed and stays all scratched (from finger nails only not metal or anything else), it's very disappointing at this price point.

Hey all,

Sorry about the late response, but I wanted to hop in here to see how I could help or clarify some things.

Upon purchase, the thermostat has a plastic film that you need to remove to uncover the sensor. Once the film has been removed, this is how your thermostat display should look like.

The main piece of plastic is the main display lens for aesthetics and is an outer layer of finish to the product. The bottom sensor is a PIR Infrared Fresnel lens that allows our sensors to function correctly. The bottom sensor doesn't have an additional film on it, so be very careful as to not scratch it.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Best regards,

As good as a guy who ruined and scratched his brand new Nest thermostat thinking there was a nasty plastic film to remove when there was actually none 😂
