Help. Can you set a max temp on thermostat.

I have three nest thermostats in a vacation rental. During the cold months tenants constantly set at 80 thinking it will warm the house faster. Then leave the room and let it get too hot. Costs me a fortune. Is there a way to set a max temperature? Thanks for any suggestions.

I’ll admit right up front that we’ve only been using the Nest thermostat for a short time but I’ve been researching and learning what this device is able to do.
We have only one vacation rental that’s a small condo. This summer a renter set the a/c to 64 for the entire weekend! This prompted me to look for help from the Nest.

One thing to try would be to lock in a range for the heat. Say 67-74. This gives renters some choice but limits the crazy temps set by some. Search for how to lock the thermostat, it’s pretty straightforward.

Our management company tells me this could lead to some negative reviews, so you have to decide, I guess, what’s most important: reasonable utility bills or the occasional negative review.
You could explain to your guests upfront that your concern for the planet has lead you to set a range of reasonable temps for your guests to decide what’s comfortable for them.

Hey smanninen,

I wanted to jump in, and see if I could be of any help. Do you mind me asking if you have set schedules on your devices? Another option you have is locking the device. Once locked, they would not be able to change the temperature unless they have your pin/access to the app. Please let me know if that helps, or if you have any questions from here.

Yes I have schedules set up. I just can't figure out how to lock in Max temps. Lmk if you can help me with that.

I copied this info which describes just one way to get to the lock feature.

Tap the Nest thermostat you'd like to lock.
Tap the Settings

icon in the top right corner.
Scroll to the bottom of the menu and tap Lock.
Enter a PIN that you can easily remember, and enter it again to confirm.
If you're locking your thermostat in Heat mode or Cool mode, you'll need to set a temperature range. Drag the slider to set the minimum and maximum temperatures while locked. Tap Lock at the bottom of the screen when you're done.
To confirm your thermostat is locked, tap Settings

. You should now find the option "Unlock" instead of "Lock."
