Nest thermostat control

Our nest system is two years old and I still can’t work it out - we have a basic schedule but then when you want more heat of an evening and turn thermostat up and nothing happens for about 2 hours - radiators stone cold and then randomly kick in later. Is there no way this system can be triggered for instant heat? From what I can gather here this seems to be a common theme with no resolution?! Can you switch over from nest to hive easily?
