Tstat requests heat but unit not on

Hi all, so I've had a potentially ongoing issue. Today when I got home the temperature had dropped to 65 deg with the thermostat set to 70. I received a message saying there was a potential issue because the heat was on but the temperature had dropped throughout the day. I went outside and the outdoor unit was not running despite the thermostat requesting heat. This has happened before so I turned off the heat and checked the filter in the indoor unit. In the past I've neglected filter changes resulting in a very dirty filter, changing the filter and turning the heat back on resolved the issue. This time the filter was clean. I turned the heat back on and I could hear the outdoor unit start, all is good. I'm wondering if there is a software issue with the tstat and replacing the filter wasn't actually the fix, cycling the heat on/off was. Has anyone experienced this? I did a brief search with no luck. Thanks

I'm sorry for the trouble this may have caused you — let's see what's going on.

To isolate:

What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
Which wiring connection does it have on its base?
Are you getting any message codes or a delay in the timer?
Were there any recent maintenance efforts made on your HVAC system?
Please gather the power readouts from its settings under technical information.

Mark, the issue has not happened again. It's very infrequent, I'd say it's happened 4 or 5 times over 3 years or so.

Hello there,

That's good to know, GMazz1. I checked on this, and here's what I found. It appears that you might need a common wire, which is a wire that's dedicated to delivering constant power and stabilizing the flow of current into the thermostat. Here's your reference to learn more about how common wire helps.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated. I'll look into hooking up the common wire and hopefully won't have anymore problems.
