Yes you need a C wire for the nest E model.

Is there a spare color wire in the old cable or is it just 2 conductors red white?

If you can pull a new 5 conductor thermostat wire to the Nest it is best way to solve the C wire problem.

Best I can tell from the app I need to install a Nest Power Connector but would like to confirm. I have a conventional heating system.

Correct, just white and red conductors, nothing else.

The C wire just supplies power right? So two questions:

1) Since the Nest E has batteries, so does it really need power? I assume all it's doing to turn the heat on is shorting the wires which would take almost no power.

2) If the Nest E needs constant power, do I need to pull a new cable from the furnace through or can I just use an external 24V power supply from a an outlet and provide power to the Nest using that?

Something like this (I would cut the plug off and wire directly to the nest):

https://www.amazon.com/ALITOVE-Supply-Adapter-100-240V-Converter/dp/B07VL8W6MQ/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=24v+wall+wart&qid=1670737421&sr=8-4

Since I'm renting my apartment but also want a Nest and have to install it myself, the less wire harnesses I have to pull through the better. Temporary is ok 🙂

Hi folks,

@Houptee, thanks for the help!

@questions24, thanks for reaching out. The Nest Thermostat E needs constant power for the thermostat itself. If there's no existing wires that we could repurpose as a C wire, we recommend looking into the Nest Power Connector.

Thanks,
