Nest Thermostat base clicking, not a C-wire issue

Our Nest Thermostat has started clicking -- the base clicks whether the thermostat is mounted or not. Everything was fine for a year or so, this is a recent issue. Our HVAC technician connected the C-wire and that has not fixed the problem. What IS the problem?

I would appreciate guidance at this point. Thank you!

Update--this is actually the Thermostat E. (we have 2 different Nests)
