Nest thermostat schedule

So does anyone else feel they have no control of their heating? Nest is trying to be too clever. It switches off if I haven’t walked past the thermostat. Then switches on during the night as the temperature drops.
I want to use this to be efficient but there is no way to get a balanced schedule. Any advice appreciated.

Is home/away assist enabled in the settings menu in the app?
