We have different temperatures scheduled through the day to correspond with whether we are likely to be in or out.

We have say 20 degrees set when expected to be in and 14 degrees set when expected to be out. So far so good...

Then we started using Eco.... we set the Eco temp at 17 so if we were expected to be in but werent the eco setitng would turn down the temp. That works fine if it is a period where we expected to be in but arent.

However if we expected to be out and the thermostat is set to 14 degrees, eco detects that we are out and goes to the eco temp of 17 degrees.

Are we doing somehting wrong? surely the nest isnt so stupid that it turns up the heating to save energy?

In other words Eco should only change the temperature downwards, never upwards?

Thanks for reaching out. I understand that schedule temperature can be confusing — I'd love to help.

Eco Temperature will automatically activate when you're away. If Home/Away Assist enabled, it might override your schedule temperature. When your Nest Thermostat uses Eco Temperature, it will focus to maintain the temperature you set for Eco.

Thanks for your reply. It seems crazy and makes Eco temperatures fairly useless as a feature though.

Eco temperatures might work for somebody who has a constant temp set 24/7 but that will apply to few if any people.

If you have different temperatures set during the day, then its purely random whether eco temperatures will reduce or increase energy usage.

To be useful, in heat mode eco temperatures should not be able to increase the temperature beyond the currently set temperature, likewise in cool mode it should not cool the temperature below the set temperature. This simple adjustment would turn a currently useless feature into a valuable one.

Thanks for letting us know. For your Nest Thermostat to stay on Eco mode when no one's at home or for a long period of time, you can try these steps here:

For Nest Thermostat, go to the Google Home app and make sure your thermostat is in Heat, Cool, or Heat • Cool mode. Next, select the Current temp or the temperature preset you want your thermostat to hold and select the end time. After that, tap Start to begin the temperature hold.

For Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E, when you set your thermostat to Eco Temperature manually, it will hold the temperature until you change it. You can manually switch to Eco Temperatures whenever you want.
