Hello folks,

I'm sorry for the late reply. I know it has been a while, but I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.

@Ebronwk, the Nest Learning Thermostats and the Nest Thermostat E's batteries are built-in, and we don't suggest replacing them as it might damage their hardware and possibly lose their function. We'd suggest installing a Nest Power Connector or a C-wire to help the thermostats sustain and have sufficient power. If there’s anything else I can help you with, please let me know.

Thanks for helping, Mel.

Regards,

Offline thermostat sensor

I see a lot of people have this problem. I have 3 nest thermostat sensors, and two thermostats, 1 upstairs and one downstairs, two of my sensors connected to one of the thermostats went offline and wouldn’t connect anymore. I unplugged the thermostat from its base, and charged it with a usb plugged, now the sensors are back online. Note: my thermostat receives hardwired power, the built in battery according to the phone read out receives enough power, yet the thermostat is saying battery is low, so I still had to charge the thermostat 3rd Generation. Can anyone tell me why. My downstairs thermostat never had this issue, “knock on wood”. Thank God. I really like the thermostat but this issue is annoying. Also the usb charge also help with the thermostat turning on upon approach.

Hi Ebronwk,

Thank you for your posting.

Give these steps a whirl:

Ensure that the wires are connected properly

Remove the thermostat display from its base and check if any connector pins are bent.

If the issue persists, contact a pro installer to discuss your options.

Keep us posted.

Best,
Mel

Is it suggested to replace the battery in the 3rd generation nest thermostat every 3 years and if not, what is the duration of the life of the battery?

Thank you for your help, what I noticed is if I keep the thermostats operating, they are staying charged, I only use them in the winter so I expect in the spring and summer, the batteries will drain because the thermostats won’t be in use, I didn’t have that issue when I first bought them, but that was 3 years ago. I did charge them using the usb connector in back of the thermostat, but I know eventually the battery will die. I wish the battery replacement was like the nest carbon/smoke detectors, lithium AA, easier to replace, but I’ll know better next time.
