3rd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat - Battery Issue

The 3rd Gen Nest Thermostat has a Li-Ion 3.7 V battery that is not replaceable without some serious engineering work. My thermostat battery is dead and I called to get a replacement battery but alas, it is not designed to be replaceable.

I asked the support agent (2-4486000033622) to help me replace the battery. After going back and forth for nearly 45 min, he gave me a number to call (855-836-3987)and let them know that I only need or order the display and not the base.

I called and after going back and forth, I was told that I had to buy the entire unit.

I thought NEST was environmentally friendly. I guess throwing away my good working thermostat sans battery is the way to go for NEST.

If anyone has tried to replace the battery, please respond. What a waste to get rid of an entire system just because the battery cannot be replaced. Maybe it is by design.

Thank you,

Vaseem Anjum

Hello vanjum,

I understand that you want to have it replaced, but we don't suggest replacing its built-in battery manually, as it might damage its hardware, which might affect its function in controlling the HVAC system. I'd love to know more about this.

Is your thermostat not turning on? Could you share a photo of your current thermostat's wiring? Also, have you tried the steps in this guide?

I'll look forward to your response.

Thanks,

I will be happy to share the pic of my wiring. I cross-checked all the wires with the furnace and they are good. I also got the common wire connected but to no avail. The thermostat is turning on and it says Stage 2 but the furnace is not turning on in stage 2. I can hear the fan running. Hope this helps.

Hello folks,

I know it's been a while, but I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.

@mike5256, I'm sorry to hear the issue still persists even with a power connector installed. Are your thermostats still draining their batteries? Let me know if you need more help.

@vanjum, I'd love to know more about this. Could you please share a photo of your thermostat's wiring? Also, please check its power readouts from the "Technical Info" settings and I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

I fixed my Learning Thermostat by changing the battery myself. I got it from Amazon. It was not easy to do and is not for everyone to try. Unfortunately, Google told me that I have to get a new one. I saved the environment and also $ by doing it myself.
