[Note I see other threads with the same question, but none are definitively answered.]

I have a Google Nest thermostat. My house uses a conventional gas forced-air furnace. There is no heat pump. However the Nest thermostat thinks there's a heat pump, for example it complains that OB is not connected (my blue wire is common, not OB). I've worked around it by specifying to always use emergency heat in the Home app.

On the Nest, the "settings" -> "equipment" menu shows no options for changing furnace type.

In the nest app, I can set the dual fuel breakpoint, heat pump wire etc. But there's no way to tell it I have a single gas heating system, not a primary+alternate. My workaround for now is to specify "always use alternate heat".

How do I fix this?

How do you have the thermostat wired?

Can you post a picture of the original thermostat's wiring?

Which wires did you select in the Google Home app while setting it up?

I have a photo of the furnace board wiring...it's straightforward Y W R G C with the obvious colors (except Blue is common). It's physically wired that same way to the Nest.
I don't recall what wiring was specified in the setup UI. I guess I made the silly mistake of assuming any setup could be adjusted in the Google home app. Apparently the UI designers are wayyyy behind the device capabilities 😞

Hello folks,

I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.

Thanks for assisting, @Patrick_Caezza.

@davis-WA-OR, I understand the wiring setup and configuration can be confusing. I'd love to know more about this.

Could you please share with us a picture of your thermostat's wiring? Also, you might have configured it as a heat pump during the set-up process, but it can be updated through the Google Home app. Please try these steps:

Open the Google Home app and select your thermostat icon.

Settings > Thermostat > Wiring.

Update if needed, or remove the heat pump configuration.

Let me know if that works.

Restart,

To summarize what happened, the Thermostat Settings in the Google Home app does not allow you to specify the type of furnace (ex. whether or not it has a heat pump). It only allows you to designate the wiring configuration, and it infers from that the type of furnace arrangement. I adjusted my wiring configuration to reflect that actual furnace circuit board arrangement (including having a C wire, but not having an OB/* wire), and so far it appears that it's still functioning properly.
