2 story house with nest smart thermostat

I'm considering buying nest smart thermostats. I'm having a real hard time seeing if things will work smoothly with my setup so I'm going to ask here.

I have a 2 story home with 2 thermostats currently. In the summer, our A/C is separate between floors. Since heat rises our A/C is on more upstairs than downstairs and its nice that its able to control temps separately by floor.

In the winter, our heat is all or nothing in the house. Still 2 thermostats but basically only the downstairs setting matters because its always colder down there since, as said before, heat rises. So while the upstairs is able to make the heat come on - the downstairs is the one that matters.

So since the heat and A/C work differently - I want to make sure that Nest thermostats can handle this. If our current "non-smart" thermostats can I'd like to think Nests can.

Also with non-Google smart thermostats I've seen that some can't be "smart" for both thermostats so I'm hoping Google's can handle that as well.

A little long winded but I've had a heck of a time getting an answer to this - even with Google chat support. 😞

Do you have two separate HVAC systems or one with a zone controller?

Post a picture of the current thermostat's wiring.

If you have a zone controller, please post a picture of it and its wiring.

Hi @Patrick_Caezza - so its one large A/C unit but can be controlled separately as if it were 2 units. I'm not sure if that's a "zone controller" or not. Apparently this is the way most of the new houses here in Vegas are setup. The heater is like a traditional heater (on or off house-wide) but the A/C functions separately by floor.

Thanks all - having them installed now has answered quite a bit. I think the main question now is around some of the advanced features. For example - Airwave switches off the compressor, but I have one A/C unit that does split duty with the 2 floors independently, so it seems like I wouldn't want that - since one floor could shut off and the other would still be going. It doesn't seem like the 2 thermostats really coordinate with each other so I fear they'll conflict with each other.
