Can a first gen Nest thermostat control a humidifier?

We have an old Nest thermostat that is working fine. I would like to add a humidifier on the furnace so I was wondering if I should look for one that the Nest can control or just get one with a separate control

In order to get the proper control, the humidifier must be wired to the thermostat controlling the heating. The Nest Gen 1 thermostat cannot support that type configured. You need to upgrade to a Nest Learning Thermostat or a Nest E thermostat.

Disappointing but that confirms what read elsewhere. I am assuming that we have a Gen 1 Nest as we have had it for years now. The About does not really say just Model=Display-2.8, Back plate mount=Backplate-2.7 and Software=5.9.4.5

There is a way to get the humidifier to work with then Gen 1. It has to do with the model you have and the wiring at the air handler. If your humidifier has a humidity setting built into it, it can be wired to be turned on anytime the furnace is activated. This is done by wiring the control circuit of the humidifier to the furnace where the W wire comes in. But this should only be done if your humidifier has an integrated humidistat. This is how humidifiers were controlled before thermostats got smart.

Since you already have a humidistat controller, probably in the room pre-wire to the humidifier you do not need to wire it up to a thermostat. It means is already internally wired from the furnace controller.
