It will depend a little on exactly what happened - thermostat fully removed, partially removed, etc. However the thermostat may be indicating it called for heat even if the HVAC system was not heating due to the disconnection. Think of it roughly like this. Let's suppose your light switch could tell you how many minutes it was on. However the fixture does not have a light bulb. The switch was on for say 20 minutes, but no power was actually consumed because there was no bulb. It's possible your thermostat thought it was heating, and telling the furnace to heat, but it was not actually heating because the thermostat was not fully on the base.

We had a decorator over and he must have accidentally pulled the nest thermostat out of the connection on the wall. I didn’t realise until the next day as the house felt cold. Once I pushed it back in the history is saying 14 hours of heating, surely this can’t be right and will I be getting a bigger than normal bill from energy company now?

Thanks for your reply, your answer makes sense and hopefully this is the case for me. The thermostat was not properly connected to the base, the decorator must have done it on accident.
