Nest Learning Thermostat - blinking green light

So I started a post back in January 2023 about my Nest Learning Thermostat blinking green light. I did the manual re-start to no avail but lo and behold it re-started by itself after a day or so. But it has been happening regularly, the thermostat blinking green light for a day or so then starting back up. Anything I can do so it doesn’t keep on freezing on me? I am afraid that it will freeze on me again just when I need to turn on my ac especially in the summertime.

The blinking green light means the thermostat is updating and will reset itself once finished.

If it never finishes or freezes, try checking the power to it, and if it doesn't have a C wire, try adding one.

Check your Nest power input by going to the Settings screen, selecting Technical Info, and then selecting Power. The battery needs to be 3.7V or higher.

Thank you for your response. My Nest thermostat is connected with a C wire and I checked the battery from the setting screen and it shows 3.94V.

I understand that the blinking green light means it’s updating and will reset itself once it finishes. But it seems the updating is taking more than a day or so before it resets. Is that normal or is there anything I can do while my Nest thermostat is online.

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Are there devices or appliances (such as baby monitors, microwaves, cordless phones, etc.) near the thermostat? If none, please check for the signal strength of your Nest Thermostat by going to Settings, then looking for Technical Info, and then selecting Network. Check for two numbers: ping speed and signal strength. If the ping isn’t available, you can check the Nest Weave connection instead, which can be seen under Settings, Technical Info, and Nest Weave. Then, determine whether or not you are connected.

Hello Zoe,

Thank you for helping. There are no devices or appliance near the Nest thermostat. I checked the signal strength and it shows 83 and then the Nest Weave shows that it is connected. I do not see and Ping Speed in the settings. Anything else I can check to see why it would freeze and after a day or so start back up again?

If your Nest Learning Thermostat's power is sufficient, the connection is okay, and there's a C wire on it, it is most likely that the Nest Learning Thermostat is still in the process of updating its software; therefore, you should not worry about it.

Thank you for your help. I think you are correct in saying that the Nest is trying to updating it’s software. I checked the settings and it show that the software was recently updated. I guess it was just taking longer to update than usual.

Is there a way to turn off the automatic updates? I think the software updates is what is making the Nest Learning thermostat freeze.

Hi Gigi,

Thanks for reaching out again to us. There is no way for a Nest Learning Thermostat to turn off its software updates unless you completely disconnect the thermostat from the internet. The software update gives the Nest Learning Thermostat the ability to be a smart thermostat and turning it off will make the Nest Learning Thermostat just like a traditional thermostat.

Hi Zoe,

I tried to completely disconnect the thermostat from the internet thinking that will stop it from trying to get updates. However, it didn’t and somehow backfired. It is now frozen with the green blinking light for 6 days now and it is still blinking even after I pulled it off the base. What should I do next to re-start it.

Hi Zoe,

I disconnected the thermostat from the wall and left it out till the battery ran out. Once it stopped blinking (from green to red) I connected it back to the wall and after a few minutes it started to work again. I immediately connected the wifi. So far so good. Let’s see if it will stay on longer and not freeze again.

Hello Gigi,

It’s me again, and I thank you for the follow-up information. Since your thermostat continues to flash a green light and remains unresponsive for more than 5 minutes, please perform the following below:

Remove and reconnect the display.
If the issue persists, press and hold down the thermostat ring for 10 seconds to restart it.
If the issue persists, verify that the thermostat mounts (can get detected by a computer if it’s connected via a micro-USB cable).
If the Nest drive doesn’t mount, restart the thermostat and the computer.
If the Nest drive still doesn’t mount, connect another USB device to the computer via the cable to check if it detects and/or installs the USB device.
- If the computer doesn’t detect the USB device, use a different USB cable, USB port, or computer.
- If the computer detects the USB device, manually eject the USB device, and then replug the display into the computer.
If the Nest drive mounts:

Find and open the folder or icon for the Nest device that should show on the computer screen.
Verify that the technicalinfo.PLIST file is visible.
Check if the customer has a computer with a Windows Operating System (OS)or macOS.
