Why does my thermostat report a false temperature

As has been previously noted, the Nest thermostat does not display the correct temperature. However, with the recent update to the Google Home app now I can actually confirm that the temperature on the display is one degree higher than the temperature the thermostat is actually reporting. I just noticed that the temperature displayed on the thermostat is 74, but when I look in the Google Home app (which is pulling the information from the thermostat) it says 73. So why is the thermostat displaying a temperature of one degree higher than the temperature being reported to the Google Home app which is the actual temperature?

Hello JG5,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiry. I'd be happy to take a look at this for you.

To isolate:

Is this a first-time installation and setup?

When did you install it?

Is your thermostat currently connected to Wi-Fi?

What is its software version? Make sure that it's up to date.

Try restarting both your phone and Nest Thermostat to refresh and check for any Google Home app updates from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,
Mark

Thanks for the info. I guess I wasn't clear in my initial post. Everything is fine with my thermostat as I have had it for over a year. However, there has always been a discrepancy between the temp reported on the thermostat vs the actual temperature in the room. The thermostat displays a temperature of one degree fahrenheit warmer than the actual temperature in the room. It will display the correct temperature for a very short period of time after a reboot, but it will revert to showing a temp one degree warmer than the actual temp again. At this moment, both the Nest app and thermostat are showing a temp of 76. My weather station which is next to the thermostat is reporting 75. The Google Home app interface which is directly connected to the thermostat shows me 75 when I open the app. The thermostat is not displaying the actual temp in the room, it is one degree warmer. Why?

Hi JG5,

Thanks for checking it with us. A slight temperature difference could be normal as different thermostats calculate the temperature differently. This delay is commonly called the maintenance band, deadband, differential, or temperature swing. The maintenance band allows the temperature in your home to change by a few degrees before turning on your system. You may notice a difference, but you should still be comfortable.

Best,
