Nest Thermostat won’t turn on.

Hello I have had my nest 3rd gen installed for for 3 months. For some reason now there is a blank screen with flashing green light and it won’t power on. Sometimes the G appears on the screen then goes away, then reappears again only to disappear. Light then flashes orange and back to flashing green. I have ran through all the troubleshooting tips provided and still nothing. It has been down now for 3 days. Any ideas on how to get this running again?

If the light blinks green and your thermostat is unresponsive for that long, it may have frozen during an update.

Remove the thermostat off the base. Make sure the pin connector is lined up correctly and push it back onto the base. You should hear a click to confirm it is properly seated.
If that doesn't help, pull your thermostat off its base again and remove both AAA batteries.
Set the thermostat down for at least 30 seconds.
Replace the batteries and press your thermostat onto the base until it clicks into place.

Hi David,

I have removed and place thermostat back on base and only thing that happens is G appears on screen then disappears and reappears again. The green light continues to blink during the cycle. The Nest 3rd Gen that I have doesn’t have AAA batteries.

Apologies, those steps are for a different thermostat model indeed. If you have 3rd gen:

Press the thermostat down until the screen turns off (about 10 seconds), then release.
Press and release the ring to turn it back on and complete the restart process.

Hi, i have the same issue and when i do what you say mine goes amber, red and then back to green light flashing but will not restart. Please advise?

Hi everyone,

I'm also having an issue with my 3rd gen Smart Leraning Thermostat. Started about 3 weeks ago when it lost WiFi, then yesterday it went off and now all I get is the Nest house symbol every now and again and a green flashing light.

Hi kpnuts,

If the Nest Thermostat display LED flashes a green light, it means your thermostat is on the software update phase software, boot up phase, or restart phase. Usually, when the thermostat flashes a green light, it only lasts a minute or two. Once the thermostat finishes the software update and restart phase , the display should turn on.

Giving these steps a whirl might help:

Remove and reconnect the display.
If the issue persists, press and hold down your thermostat ring for 10 seconds to restart it.
If the issue persists, please verify that your thermostat mounts (can get detected by a computer if it’s connected via a micro-USB cable).
If the Nest drive doesn’t mount, restart the thermostat and the computer.
If the Nest drive still doesn’t mount, connect another USB device to the computer via the cable to check if it detects and/or installs the USB device.
1. If the computer doesn’t detect the USB device, use a different USB cable, USB port, or computer.
2. If the computer detects the USB device, manually eject the USB device, and then replug the display into the computer.

Hi Everyone, I was not able to get my Nest 3rd Gen to start again. I tried all the recommended fixes and nothing. Unfortunately I had to buy a new Nest Thermostat and no issues to date. How would I go about getting a refund for broken 3rd Gen? It was only 3 months old.
