Can't invite my wife to my household on Google Home

All I have is a Google Nest Doorbell and now the worse App Google made for it. There is no way to add anyone to my account. When I try it says "Can't send invite right now." There are no other options and the app then lags. 

No one else is in the household - I just want to add one person to full use of the account. What gives?

If you try to send a household invite to a non-gmail account, Google Nest returns the misleading error "Can't send invite right now". You'll have to ask Google Nest engineers why the error message doesn't simply say "Household members must have a gmail account."

Creating a second completely unnecessary email that I don’t monitor “solved” the problem. Thank you! 

Google might consider hiring the Nest team back for UX and UI so they don’t have such a terrible app.
