Error trying to sign up for Gemini for Home

I got the prompt in the Google Home app (on my Pixel phone) to sign up for early access to Gemini for Home. Every time I try, though, I get a toast message that says "Unable to save settings."

My Home app is up to date and my phone has been restarted.

What could be wrong on my account that's preventing me from signing up for early access?

Same exact problem for me. Tried reboot of phone, tried on several different days and nothing.

Thanks to Google's support chat (I'm a Google One subscriber), I was able to fix this.

Apparently signing up for early access actually needs to add the user's Gmail account to a Google Groups group. But there's a permission setting in Google Groups that has to be enabled for that to work.

1. On a regular (desktop) Chrome browser, go to https://groups.google.com/ 
2. Click the gear icon ⛭ in the upper-right corner.
3. Select Global Settings
4. Make sure the checkbox next to "Add me to their groups" is checked.
5. Click the Save button/link.
6. Back in the Home app on your phone, try the Sign Up for early access again.

When I did these steps, it was successful and the Home app says "You've signed up for early access to Gemini for Home features..."
