Home app will not finish Chromecast setup until the app is updated... But it's up to date

I had my Chromecast set up and everything was great 2 months ago, but it would not connect anymore so I gave it a factory reset and removed it from my Home app to set up again.

The Home app and Chromecast see each other and will connect, but the Home app stops and tells me to update it before continuing. When hitting the Update button, it brings me to the Play Store where I can uninstall or open the Home app as it is already fully updated.

I've factory reset the Chromecast again, uninstalled the Home app, cleared all cache and app date, reinstalled, rebooted my home router and modem, but the Home app keeps insisting it is out of date. My Play Store is also up to date.

I'm not sure what else to try resetting other then my phone itself (factory reset -I have tried rebooting the phone and tried a different wifi network as well), which I really rather not do.

Any troubleshooting steps I'm missing?

Hi imigm,

Thanks for reaching out and for providing a detailed info of your issue. Please make sure your phone's OS is also updated so it will be compatible with the Google Home app. Using a different mobile device if possible might also help.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hello Jennifer,

Thank you for checking in!

Unfortunately, I do not have another mobile device to test the Home app on. My OS is up to date for my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. The Play Store app itself is also up to date. The Home app still refuses to continue setup for the Chromecast, saying the Home app needs to be updated although it is up to date once the devices connect on WiFi.

I have not fully looked into it, but is there a way to set up the Chromecast for use via a Computer with a Google account in the mean time to still stream things? Otherwise I'm just waiting for Google Home to update again to see if that fixes the issue.

Thank you.

Hi there,

You're welcome and thanks for getting back to us. Using a computer to set up Chromecast is no longer supported. To set up Chromecast, we need to use a mobile device. If you have a friend or a family member who's with you, you may try to borrow their phone so we can isolate the issue.

Thanks,

Jennifer

I do, but I am unable to try with another phone nor is the app working, but I am putting this aside for now as I bought a different smart device for streaming.

Thank you for your help! Feel free to close this thread.
