Nest app asks for login when connecting to Google Home

Chefmoosh

I have seen a few questions about this issue but frustratingly no results.

I have been running Google Home for a few months now. Today I installed the Nest app when I was setting up 2 protect devices. When logging in I used my Google account instead of a separate Nest account. This has had no issues and I can log in to the Nest app and Nest.com with my Google account.

The issue is when I try and add the Nest devices to my Google Home app (via the 'Works with Google' option), when I select Nest it takes me to a login screen, but I have no login for Nest. Trying my Google login doesn't work, trying 'forgot my password' doesn't work (no link is sent to my email). When I am in the 'forgot my password' screen there is a link to Sign in with Google, but that takes me to a Error 400: redirect_url_mismatch screen.

When trying to add it in the Google Home app with Set up device -> New device (instead of 'Works with Google') it opens the Nest app.

This is running through a Samsung phone. I have made sure my Home app is updated and the Nest app was installed today so should be fine. The Nest Protects are working and are connected to the Nest app.

Anything to progress this would be very appreciated.

Same problem. Trying to setup NEST to talk to Google Nest Home for a Ring doorbell, and it refers me to a NEST site that requires login credentials. The irony is all my Google based logins use the auto Google login auth so no user/pass is required, and when signing into this NEST login it requires Email/pass with no option to "Login with Google" like any other part of the Google ecosphere. I can login to NEST via a browser on my desktop PC but that's cause once again it uses the Google credentials automatically through my browser. So at a bit of a dead end, tried password retrieval, nothing is ever received. Yes I know Ring isn't Google proprietary hardware, but I believe you can still get basic functionality through Nest so I can have my Nest Hubs throughout the house ring when someone is at the door. I shall continue to tinker in the interim. It's almost like Nest forgot to put the "Login with Google" credentials option on this login screen /sigh.

Hey there,

Sorry to hear about the issues that you're having when trying to set up your Nest products, I'm sure it's confusing with the different accounts, but I'm happy to help.

I would suggest reviewing this article as it walks you through the steps to setting up your Nest Protect. Setting up a Nest account is required whenever you are trying to set up a Nest device.
Please let me know if you have any other questions after you review that article.

Did you read the posts before replying? Nobody here is having trouble setting up their Nest Protects or setting up the Nest app. Quite simply there’s a bug in your Nest/Google Home app integrations that prevent us from being able to sync our accounts.

Nest app asks us to “login with Google” rather than having a standalone Nest account. Once we’ve done this, and then attempt to sync our Nest account through the Google Home app, it only gives us the option to login via Nest. Since we’ve switched to a Google login for the Nest app, we no longer have a username or password. It’s a closed loop, there’s literally nothing we can do.

Please escalate this to an engineering or marketing team who can put the proper login options for us to integrate these apps.

Hi Garrett,

I have completed the Nest set up, the issue is the connection to Google Home, specifically Nest asking for a login when using the Google account as a login to Nest. I agree with Cotnoir that is seems this has been forgotten by the engineers, although as I said there is a option to login with Google that goes to an error screen.

Hey there,

It appears there may be some confusion as it relates to the Nest-Google Home integration.

  • The Works With Google linking is specifically for customers who have a Nest account that did not migrate to a Google Account (i.e. they have a username and password in the Nest app and don't use the Sign In with Google option).
  • If you are using a migrated account, compatible Nest devices should show up in the Home app provided you set up the Nest devices using the same Google Account and in the same home structure.
  • If you can confirm the information above, you can try telling your Google Assistant "Ok Google, sync my devices" to try to sync devices from the Nest service to get them to show up.

Once we rule out the items above, we can proceed with opening up a case for anyone who needs it, as long as you have gone through the aforementioned troubleshooting.

Happy Holidays,

Garrett DS

Hi Garrett,

To answer your questions,

- this is my first Nest item so I have not migrated to a Google account, this is a new Nest account, and I used the 'Sign in with Google' option

- Not a migrated account

- Telling the Google Assistant to sync my accounts did not add the Nest protects to my Google Home.

Thanks,

ChefM

Is it possible to connect them if you are not using the same google account? I am using a g suite account for my google home and have forever but since you can’t do that with nest i had to use a different google account with the nest app. Does this mean i can’t add the nest device to my google home? Or is there something i can do?

I have the same problem, when I want to connect my Nest app to my Google Home app there is no Login with Google button to click on.

Did someone got any solution about this? Having the same problem. Thank you!

same issue, is there a fix? Would resetting to factory settings and reinstalling the nest protects help?

I solved it for my case:

My Google Home app was set up with a G-suit account and my Nest doorbell was set up with a regular Gmail account. As soon as I reset my Google Home app to factory settings and set it up with the same regular Gmail account as my Nest doorbell, everything automatically connected and works!

So make sure you use the same regular Gmail account on all devices.

I hope this solves the problem for some of you. Good luck!

Good luck!

I'm afraid in this case both accounts are a regular Gmail account.

My Google home app hasnt automatically connected to nest and there is no option to Login with Google when adding nest as a device. it only asks for a nest login/password which i dont have.

I had a similar issue and found a fix.

I was setting up a new Wired Doorbell. The Wired Doorbell cannot be setup via Home directly, so you need to go through the Nest App. I was new to Nest so had used my Google Credentials for the account.

Next I was trying to link my doorbell to my Home account, but the device wasn't showing, so I used the Works with Google and encountered the issue above.

The fix was not what I had expected. The issue was that in my Nest Account the Doorbell was unassigned to any room. Once I added it to a Room in the Nest App, the system synchronised and my doorbell appeared automatically within the Home App and linked to my Home Devices.

Thanks Robin, my smoke detectors are in rooms in Nest, but after your message I tried renaming them to the same rooms as I had in Home, but no luck! My next step is the nuclear option of deleting everything from Home and/or Nest, and if that doesn't work then never ever buying a Nest product again.

Hey there,

Sorry to hear about the issues that you're still having.

Just a few things to clarify:

  • New accounts shouldn't need to use the account linking page (Works with Google) since information should get synced across Nest and Google Home apps.
  • If it's a new account created after August 2019, then it's treated like a migrated account (uses Sign in with Google).
  • Nest Protects are not supported in the Home app and won't show up there.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Best regards,

Garrett DS

Thanks Garrett for the reply

I think your response:

  • Nest Protects are not supported in the Home app and won't show up there.

was the key to the issue I was having. Having a situation where Google Nest products do not show up in the Google Home app is completely bizarre and probably reinforces my decision to never purchase a Google Nest product again. It seems to be a tease to even have an option in both apps to link to one another without actually doing it.

Thanks again

CM

Hey there,

Unfortunately we don't have any information on whether this is going to be on the roadmap to fix in the future or not.

It sounds like we have a solution, but I'll leave this open for 24 hours and please let me know if you have any other questions.

Best regards,

Garrett DS

Is this on the roadmap to resolve? Hoping this is something that will be fixed soon.

Having this issue too. Are they going to fix this? I think it’s ridiculous when you spend all this money for electronics they ADVERTISE working together and DO NOT. I click the nest option when adding a new device. Have the press forgot password to attempt to sign in with google. It lets me sign in then takes me back to the nest login and it’s an infinite loop. No success.
