No Nest app notifications on Pixel 8

VK2023
Community Member

Moving from a Pixel 7 to Pixel 8, I do not receive any notifications from any of my Nest devices through the Nest app. I still receive the notifications on my Pixel 7 and my wife who has a Pixel 8 receives them also, so the app is pushing them.

I have done a hard reset on the Pixel 8 and I have verified all the notification settings are correct in the Nest app.

UPDATE: Notifications just suddenly started working. No idea why

Hey folks,

I have a quick update from the support team. They’re asking everyone to try the additional steps below:

  • Disable and then re-enable notification permissions via Android app settings (long-hold Nest app icon > App info > Permissions).
  • Toggle notifications off in the Nest app, wait 60 seconds, and re-enable.

If the issue persists, for those who haven't done so already, please provide the following details so we can investigate further:

  • Make and model of all the mobile devices used to test.
  • Android OS version.
  • Nest app version.

Let me know how it goes.

@mheschl, thanks for providing your device information. Please try the suggested steps above and check if they fix the issue.

Thank you all for your patience while we work on this.

Regards,

Lance

That's a piss take! Like I said my wife went for the pixel 8 pro from 6 and it's working for her. But for me no as I still have pixel 6. Utterly unacceptable from Google! They're taking the piss

Just..... Wow.

I'd like to think it's because Google is spending all this time moving legacy Nest Devices (although the Nest Doorbell Wired is actually still a live sold device in the EU and UK!!!) from the Nest App to the Home App, therefore removing the problem.

But being there is still absolutely no news on this after almost 2 years, I'm feeling this isn't the case either anymore.

It's just generally shockingly poor service from Google, and all it is, is a software issue, which apparently they are world renowned for being the best at

Agreed that it is not a Pixel 8 problem.  It is an Android 14 issue. I stated long time ago that upgrading a Pixel 6 to Android 14, logging out of the Nest app and then logging back in kills the push notifications.

Not sure why support is fixated on Pixel 8. To me, it is obvious from this thread and the early information given, the support and development teams are ignoring some important clues to resolving this.

Hi,

Pixel 8a, same issue

jcappellino
Community Member

I would like to reiterate from my previous message above:

To add to this, my notifications were working on my Pixel 6a on Android 14 after upgrading from Android 13.  I encountered the storage issue, and had to factory reset. After resetting up the device, the Nest app notifications stopped working. I then, shortly upgraded to the Pixel 8 running Android 14 out of the box. Upon setting up the app, notifications still didn't work. I have cleared the settings on the app, logged out and logged back in, all to no avail.

Thankfully though, the notifications are working on my wife's Pixel 6a, so it's not a complete loss. That being said, I have been without notifications for about a month.

Joseph M Cappellino

This is not a hardware problem.  This is a software problem. The issue started only after a factory reset on my Pixel 6a (at the time) on Android 14. I'm sure I used the "device backup" method to restore my phone. This has continued as well with my subsequent upgrade to the Pixel 8.

Similarly (related or not), I realized that at about the same time, I stopped receiving notifications for the ParentSquare app used by my children's schools to communicate messages. I know this was working at some point, and again, the notifications are still working on my wife's Pixel 6a on Android 14. My concern is that when she upgrades (will probably upgrade later this year), will she also lose these notifications?

I still have my old Pixel 6a. I will play with that:

  1. I will downgrade to Android 13 and ensure notifications are working
  2. Upgrade to Android 14 and ensure notifications are working
  3. Factory reset on Android 14 and restore from backup and see if they fail (this seems to be the biggest pain point)
  4. Factory reset again and start from scratch and see if they begin working again.
Joseph M Cappellino

Thank you for taking on this time consuming task since Google engineers are apparently too lazy to even figure out exactly what's causing this to occur.

I don't remember anymore but I think I did a factory reset with backup enabled and it didn't help on a Pixel Fold.

I have a Pixel 7 Pro and it's gone through all it's upgrades with no impact to notifications.

It took a little bit to get the Android Flash Tool working, but I have reverted back to Android 13, and as expected the Nest notifications are working.  I'm waiting for a ParentSquare message to come in, which shouldn't be much more than a couple of hours. Unfortunately, I missed a message by mere minutes. 😖

From there, I will upgrade to Android 14 and check again. I'm sure this will work as expected. Unfortunately, there is no way to confirm this process on the Pixel 8, as it shipped with Android 14. The only way to verify this would be to reflash the device with the stock image (hopefully that will guarantee a "clean" device), and setup from scratch.

Below are screenshots showing the device info, and that Nest notifications are indeed working.

Screenshot_20240513-124100.pngScreenshot_20240513-124049.pngScreenshot_20240513-130406.png

Joseph M Cappellino

I received notifications on ParentSquare as well for Android 13.  I have screenshots if Google actually asks.  LOL.

Android 14 Update complete and am receiving app notifications in Nest. I haven't confirmed ParentSquare in Android 14, but I assume it should work as well. This confirms that it's not a hardware/software incompatibility, and just software.

Screenshot_20240513-154756.pngScreenshot_20240513-153249.png

I will now ensure I have a valid backup of the device and then perform a factory reset.  From there, based on previous experience, this is where the breakdown should occur.

Joseph M Cappellino

Is there a way I can go back to Android 13? (Downgrade)

Not on the Pixel 8. It was shipped with Android 14,  I had thought about doing that, too.

Joseph M Cappellino

Do you know if I can do with with my pixel 6?

Yes!!  You can go to this site, and follow the steps to enable USB Debugging and Bootloader unlocking.

https://flash.android.com/

Once your device is found, select the Android 13 build in the list towards the bottom. Follow the steps to reset the device.  Remember, this MUST perform a full reset of the device.

Joseph M Cappellino

I have restored the Pixel 6a on Android 14 using a backup, and the notifications fail to come through. To verify, I had to use my Chromebook with the Nest app installed.

Below is the screenshot from my Chromebook showing 3 notifications came through (2 doorbells and 1  person), followed by the Pixel 6a notification history panel showing there were no such notifications from the Nest app.

I will now restore the device from scratch and see if they begin to work again.

Screenshot 2024-05-13 16.20.04.pngScreenshot_20240513-162153.png

Joseph M Cappellino

Unfortunately, I have bad news.  It seems the factory reset did NOT fix the notifications. In my steps, I ensured to remove my account and clear the PIN (i.e. - a completely new device).

This means that it's definitely an Android 14 problem! My guess is that something changed in the notification system between Android 13 and Android 14 that allowed it to work easily on upgrade, but fails on new/restored devices.

The only other thing I can see, but not sure how well it would work, is that the Android Flash Tool (https://flash.android.com/) does allow you to select an AOSP build of Android 13 for the Pixel 8, but I am not sure of the upgrade path afterwards. You could attempt to drop the Android 14 build over top of it without wiping data, but it is rather risky with your main device.  LOL.

Of course, none of this should be required if Google were to either: a) fix the notifications on the aging (legacy?) Nest app; b) fully move the Nest Doorbell to the Google Home app.

Joseph M Cappellino

Thanks for taking the time.

Very strange indeed.

There are some people on here that reported success with a factory reset.

So the issue might even be more complex.

Pixel8a
Community Member

A factory reset did not work for me. Once without transferring any of my files and data and the other with.

I'm still dealing with this since October, you are pathetic as usual to your loyal customers Google.

The sad thing is, Google has had all of the information they needed since October to fix this. What I sent to them so many months ago is just being confirmed by almost everyone on this thread.

My old Pixel 6a shows notifications running 14.

Switched to the 8a and all of sudden none.

Downloaded Nest app on my Samung 9Fe running Android 14 an also no notifications.

All the more reason to believe this is a software problem.  Maybe this is what they mean by the Pixel 8/8a's not being able to support notifications, as they ship with Android 14 out of the box.

Joseph M Cappellino

But so far there hasn't been a correlation. Every case is different. Some pixel 8s work. Others don't etc

So basically it's hit and miss

Unfortunately, yes.

Joseph M Cappellino

Pixel8a

I think my 6a works with 14 is because it ran 12, then 13 before.

Perhaps if you were able to downgrade to 13 first, then upgrade it may work.

Obviously it won't be an option for my 8a

Yep.  It seems that anything that upgraded from a previous version of Android should be able to maintain notifications. Anything that shipped with/or is reset from Android 14 seems to be hit or miss.

I'm in luck, somewhat, that my Pixelbook still gets notifications, as does my wife's Pixel 6a.  Unfortunately, she's due for an upgrade soon, and will most likely cause an issue there.

In my experience when you upgrade from 13 to 14, you should still receive the push notifications until you log out of the Nest app and then log back in. That is what happened on my Pixel 6

Seems notifications on my Samsung tab 9fe gets the notifications on android 14. Seems it's just stock android that's no good

Has anyone tried the android 15 beta to see if notifications are broken on that too?

They'll probably launch a newer Beta later today after Google I/O. I might upgrade then.

Do you know if this is available in the UK? As no updates available when I'm going on
