Pixel 8 Pro and Home app presence sensing disconnect

There seems to be a disconnect between my Pixel 8 Pro and the Google home app presence sensing.  Although I have all the settings to have location active at all times,

the Google home does not detect my presence until I open the app.  This wholly defeats the purpose.  When I leave the house I do not want to have to open the app for the location to change.  That catamounts into manually changing my location.  I have another Pixel 8  (standard) attached to the same Google home, which works properly.  Upon research it seems that in the Pixel community they refer to the the Nest community, and I am hoping that the Nest community does not refer me back to the Pixel community.  I am at the current Android 15 with Oct 5, security patch level.

If there is something that I am missing, pleas let me know, but I believe this is a bug, and am hoping to find a work around (other than opening the app to update the location)

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi @Tōn,

Thank you for posting in the community. I’m sorry to hear that presence sensing is disconnecting from your Pixel 8 Pro and the Google Home app. Let me help you with this.

Turn presence sensing on if you want to use your phone's location to determine your home or away status.

  • Open the Google Home app.
  • Tap Settings.
  • In the "Home features" section, tap Presence sensing.
  • Tap the switch next to Allow this home to use phone locations to turn it on or off.

To check and discard any concern with an app update, please delete the Google Home app and then install the app again.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Lusvin.

No sustained change.  Upon reinstalling the app, it works for a day of so then fails.

I apologize if my representation was unclear.  I do have presence sensing turned on,  which is how I know it was not working.  The disconnect, in my eyes, is specific to the Pixel 8 Pro, as I have a Pixel 8 as a Home member which has no problem.

I have tried your suggestions with no success. I think there is an issue with presence sensing in the latest version of the Home App (Version 3.26.1.3, dated November 6, 2024). The Home App presence sensing worked fine before this version of the App was released. Is there any way to roll back to the previous version of the Home App (Android)?

I am having the same issue. The Home App presence sensing does not work properly. It frequently changes my Nest thermostat to "Eco" mode even when my wife and I are both home (both of our phones are home with us and the App is set to always be able to access location data from both phones).

Presence sensing has always worked OK until just recently. This issue seems to have started with an update of the Home App (Android) to Version 3.26.1.3 dated November 6, 2024. Ever since this update the presence sensing is not working properly.

I have tried every troubleshooting step I can find on the Internet including uninstalling and reinstalling the Home App.

I am convinced that the issue is related to the new version of the Home App. What version are you running?
